5.0 out of 5 stars Positive This is a book for everyone. For it being an older book it is an easy read. I was pleasantly surprised. I had heard of this book all my life but dismissed it because of the cliche sounding title. Decades later I heard a rave review of it & thought I'd try it. I had slight judgements that it was a selfish, get what you want, kind of book. And, it is. But, far more caring & human than I wanted to think. It is not one sided, at all. But, it is a good educated, intelligent, look at relationship & genuinely caring about the people you interact with. Good book. Good read. 2 people found this helpful

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! This really is a good book. Didn’t realize how old it was and still relevant to this day. There were small moments that felt like it was rambling on but a good 97% was all good material. And there are courses that are used in business world. How to listen to people, how to treat people, and how to talk to people. This really is a great book for human relations especially if you’re a social person and would like to improve your communication skills. I absolutely recommend reading this. I greatly enjoyed it and shared my thoughts with my coworkers. One person found this helpful

5.0 out of 5 stars Read and re-read! This book never gets old. My father first made me read this when I was a young teenager. I have since referred back to it and re-read it countless times over the years. It never hurts to get a refresher. Helps me to be a better person in all of my relationships (work, family, personal, etc). 3 people found this helpful

2.0 out of 5 stars There's better books out there This book does a decent job of introducing the reader to basic concepts of interpersonal habits that lead to likeability, but the anecdotes given within, coupled with the matter-of-fact tone of the author, give the impression of someone trying to enforce his ideas with endless appeals to ethos. What would have really helped make this book less of a slog and more enlightening is testimony from psychologists or experts of the time. Instead, Dale invokes Confucius alongside laymen of the time, Napoleon alongside FDR in his chapter on remembering names, creating a web of loose-connections strung together to support his ideas. This becomes exhausting as each chapter introduces dozens of new people to draw lessons from, and becomes even more exhausting as he does very little to interrupt this writing style, creating a homogeneous, unbroken mess of nearly identical passages describing the same concept multiple times. The impression I get from this book is that a lot of it can be cut while still preserving the arguments Carnegie wishes to present. It is long-winded, self-important, and annoying to read due to his writing style and the framing of his arguments. The concepts that Carnegie introduces aren't incorrect, but they could be presented more concisely, without the fluff, and would benefit from an expert opinion as opposed to a sea of quotations chosen. I don't need to know who Aristotle or Socrates are to understand that people like hearing their own name, because I already know that I like hearing my name in conversation, and that knowledge is not 2000-years old. There are more modern books, such as 'Honoring The Self' by Nathaniel Branden, which will likely do more to teach people how to conduct themselves in public, exude confidence, and gain the respect of others without parsing through an inflated and outdated text. 'How To Win Friends...' feels as though it was written more for a business and sales applications, and less for personal development.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gift gift to my teenage daughter This book is pretty life-changing for any professional. I wanted to use it as a bridge to have some important conversations with my daughter as she is starting to look for her first job. We sit down and read a chapter together once in a while. Note, that this has, some changes from the original. All the main text is the same, but you might see a story added, or swapped around. It didn't hinder the experience of reading it with my daughter. 4 people found this helpful

4.0 out of 5 stars A great source for improving one’s own self This book is a timepiece classic, written in the 1930’s, I heard about it several times in my 35 years of life and finally decided to see what all the talk was about. Dale Carnegie addresses personal character growth in manners from all works of life, many of which he managed to actually encounter while on his own personal path of achieving success. His teachings come both his real life experiences (that he seems to easily recall) as well as the experiences of those he met on his journey. The book is laid out simply with chapters in an outlined organization that ties it all together fashionably. This would be the first book I’d recommend to anyone who’s looking to even take their first steps in improving relationships with all people - family, coworkers, friends and most importantly, their own selves. 6 people found this helpful

5.0 out of 5 stars A guide to truly measure oneself Think of any person who has had a profound positive influence on your life (a former coach, teacher, parent, boss etc…) and most likely that person has adhered to the concepts Dale Carnegie lays out in How To Win Friends & Influence People. This positive influence may have strictly adhered to the concepts in this book without even knowing of its existence.Mr. Carnegie has created a masterpiece on dealing with people that has endured the test of time (published in the 1930s) that is relevant now more than ever.Although I agree with every single concept Mr. Carnegie lays out in this book, I must admit, that unfortunately in my experience in life, there will be MANY people you will have to deal with who are not worthy of the unconditional understanding and seeing things from their point of view as described in this book. These people should simply be removed from your life in order for you to attain a desirable and worthwhile existence.I have marked dozens of pages and quotes from this book that I plan to revisit often. If you want to be a genuine person who others will admire, then this book is for you. 5 people found this helpful

5.0 out of 5 stars Life changing Cannot say where I would be now if I did not read this book. I had bought it 10 years ago, and read it a handful of times. Some of the concepts in the book are things we mostly take for granted, but are brought into awareness, and you start to view the world differently. Now that I have amass a book collection, you will find that throughout most books of this kind the same concepts repeat. The best things in life are other people and this book will help you understand why that is. One person found this helpful

5.0 out of 5 stars Enlightened and brought to tears by Ch1 I'm on a journey to improve myself, and this book was the second one I bought with that in mind. I honestly didn't know what to expect, but, probably because it was encouraged by the book itself, I pulled out my pens, highlighters, and sticky notes as I read. I haven't finished quite yet -- really only just started -- but I am not incredibly grateful already for the advice this book gives but also in the way it is presented. I will be rereading this book often and would totally recommend to anyone else starting their self-improvement journey! One person found this helpful
